SAPPORO INTERNATIONAL ART FESTIVAL

MAREWREW

A female vocal group dedicated to performing and passing down “Upopo”, the traditional folk song of the Ainu. With their characteristic trance-like chorus and faithful recreation of the Upopo, they have become an invaluable group for the tradition. They began to officially perform as a group in 2010 and have been on “Nihongo de Asobo”, a popular children’s program on NHK, “Mouso Nihon Ryori” (also NHK), performed in Womad (UK), a global festival of world music, as well as other performances in Europe, and continues to garner attention from both in and out of Japan. “Marewrew” means “butterfly” in the Ainu language.
