While gaining inspiration from places and people he has encountered through activities in Sapporo since 2016, Umeda Tetsuya will present new installations at two venues: Kinichikan Building in the city center and Ringo, a warehouse made of freestone where apples used to be stored, in the Nakanoshima area.

Umeda creates unique site-specific experiences by starting with an observation of the venue and assessment of the environment. He has released site-specific work in all sorts of places, including museums and galleries, as well as shopping malls, department stores, stations and other public spaces, in addition to abandoned buildings, rivers and lakes. His objects made from waste materials and everyday items have a simple structure yet move unpredictably, converting the invisible into a simple sound or light phenomenon and transforming a space dynamically. His exhibits have many tricks that induce human movements. By incorporating the results of interference between the viewer and the work, a “coreless world” unpredictable even to the artist will emerge.
