The Role of Events
Finding medium- to long-term value
Art festivals tend to be preceded by a variety of related events, including presentations of works by artists, commentary from curators on the overall context of the venue, and introductions to the latest trends in the creative field from invited experts. These events are essential to deepen the understanding of the festival. Local art festivals often struggle to attract visitors and are sometimes hesitant to hold such events. However, the value of an event changes once we assess its medium- to long-term purpose. サイアフ has been, and still is, conducting various events through the means of exploratory processes.
Archiving for easy access to references
Public podcasts were recorded at サイアフ2024 with WIRED JAPAN, who participated in the festival as an Initiative Partner. There is some overlap in the realm of content covered by サイアフ and WIRED JAPAN, and a number of サイアフ2024’s artists had already appeared in the medium in some form or another. On this occasion, editorial staff invited various guests, primarily participating artists, to several recordings in the form of talk events. These talk sessions were quickly distributed through the WIRED JAPAN channel following minor editing work. While the minimalist style of the events meant that they were confined to audio recordings, they not only contributed to the understanding of the artwork, but also allowed readers of WIRED JAPAN to become more familiar with サイアフ due to their archive-like nature. Consequently, the talk events were truly fruitful much like a single seed producing a great harvest.
Internal rehearsals for the main festival
Even smaller-scale talk sessions involve a series of preparations such as planning, date selection, venue and performer booking, publicity, venue set-up, and management of participants. It is actually very similar to the preparation flow for the main festival, just on a different scale. For municipal staff members with no experience in art festivals, working for events like this allow them to prepare themselves for the main festival, and to confirm that each department and role is functioning properly. Holding regular events also allows the Secretariat to observe and bolster any shortfalls. Of course, the content of the talks will also provide staff with learning experiences. These events play an important role in enhancing the knowledge of festival-related issues, strengthening the internal bonds of the Secretariat and familiarizing staff with the management of the festival.
