Suzuki Akio
Born in 1941, and living in Kyotango, Kyoto. Suzuki Akio began a series of “Self-Study Events” in 1963, invented an echo instrument named Analapos in 1970, and did his first conceptual performance at the Festival d’Automne in Paris in 1978. In 1988, he constructed a piece called Hinatabokko no Kukan (Space in the Sun) in Amino Town, Kyoto Prefecture, which is situated on a meridian line, as a place to listen to the sound of nature. From 1996, he held the Otodate (Echo Point) project in more than 30 cities around the world to search for echo points in the cities. He is known for performances that draw sound from various everyday items, and has performed in numerous collaborations with improvisers. He has been invited to art exhibitions and music festivals around the world, such as Documenta 8 (Germany, 1987), the Donaueschingen Festival (Germany, 1998), the British Museum (U.K., 2002), the Zadkine Museum (France, 2004) and the AV Festival (U.K., 2014).
