Shirahama Masaya
Born in Kamaishi, Iwate, 1961. He has been creating absurd narrative images and 3D works since the ‘90s. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, which hit his hometown and killed relatives, he has focused on creating wooden sculptures of deities wishing for the repose of souls and recovery. In 2014, he held the exhibition Matsuri, Enjo, Chinmoku, soshite… Post 3.11 (lit. Festival, Burning, Silence, and… Post 3.11) (Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum) and the sequel Komyo no Tane Post 3.11 (lit. Seeds of Light Post 3.11) (Maruki Gallery for the Hiroshima Panels). Since 2014, he has lived in Tokachi, where he opened and manages Art Labo Kitabune/Northen Ark.
