Completed in 1888 against a beautiful background of vivid seasonal landscapes, this building is popularly known as Red Brick. It was designed by a Hokkaido Government team headed by renowned engineer Seijiro Hirai and built using brick in the American neo-baroque style. The brick, soft stone, timber and many other materials used in its construction were produced in Hokkaido. The facility served as the nerve center of the Hokkaido Government and a hub of local activity for 80 years until a new government building was completed.
Red Brick is one of only a few outstanding Western-style structures remaining from Japan’s Meiji Period (1868 – 1912), and was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 1969.
