Genichiro Kakegawa
Born in Muroran, Hokkaido, Genichiro Kakegawa was influenced by the photojournalistic work of Ken Domon and others in the 1950s, and was active as a social-realist photographer documenting life in Hokkaido. His books include Ainu no shinwa (Myths of the Ainu), Ainu no shiki (Seasons of the Ainu, in collaboration with Genzo Sarashina), Wakaki utari ni (To Young Utari [fellows]),Daichi ni ikiru (Living on the Earth), and Batchelor Yaeko no shogai (The Life of Yaeko Batchelor). Kakegawa won the 7th Higashikawa Special Prize in 1991. He lived in Sapporo from 2000 onward, and in April 2004 published a photo book collecting approximately seven decades of his work, Gen: Kakegawa Genichiro ga mita sengo Hokkaido (Gen: Postwar Hokkaido As Seen By Genichiro Kakegawa). Major exhibitions include “Shashinka Kakegawa Genichiro no 20 seiki” (The 20th Century by Photographer Genichiro Kakegawa) (Hokkaido Museum of Literature, 2004).
