Senster on Live from Warsaw and Sapporo to the world

As one of the opening programs, we hold a live streaming event on the SIAF YouTube channel starting at 11:00 [UTC] on Sunday, December 20, connecting Sapporo, Japan [20:00 JST, UTC+9] with the installation Senster which is currently exhibited in Warsaw, Poland [12:00 CET, UTC+1].

Senster was created by Edward Ihnatowicz, a sculptor of Polish origin who worked in London. The work is considered one of the masterpieces in the history of media art.
It was an epoch-making piece around 1970 that would move by reacting to the presence of people in its surroundings, the changes in movement controlled by a computer program. This groundbreaking endeavor was regarded as a pioneering example of media art and continues to inspire many artists and researchers to date.

Originally, it was scheduled to be exhibited at SIAF2020 from December 19, 2020, marking its first showing in Asia and outside of Europe.

The streaming will be an unique opportunity for people around the world to view the Senster in motion from the exhibition “Sculpture in Search of Place” at Zachęta Gallery in Warsaw, Poland.

In this program, we will focus on Senster’s technical background, by showing how to start its operation and explaining in detail the way it interacts with the audience. Anyone watching is able to ask questions and make comments on live chat.

Agnieszka Kubicka-Dzieduszycka, SIAF2020 Curatorial Director of Media Art, Anna Olszewska, who directed the reactivation of Senster, and Anna Maria Leśniewska, the curator of the exhibition at the Zachęta Gallery, will appear live from Warsaw to share its significance and various contexts in relation to the piece.

From Sapporo, Kei Komachiya, one of the SIAF Lab Project Directors, and Norimichi Hirakawa, a media artist, will join the program. It will be delivered with consecutive interpretation by Kanoko Tamura, SIAF2020 Director of Communication Design.

Born in 1926 in Poland. Lived and worked in the U.K. until he died in 1988. He studied painting, and was interested in film, photography, and engineering. In the late 1960s and early '70s he got recognition as a cybernetic sculptor. His ground-breaking interactive sculptures, such as SAM and The Senster, explored the relations between humans and technology. The Senster, his major work, was the first computer-controlled large hydraulic cybernetic sculpture, commissioned by the Philips electronics company.
